WHAT IS THE DRUG DETOX PROCESS LIKE?

At Costa Rica Treatment Center the drug and alcohol detox process includes a complete and thorough medical evaluation. This evaluation is done at the intake process by one of our three psychiatrists or two general doctors. After the medical evaluation is complete, an individualized medical detox protocol is developed in collaboration with the client. Instructions are passed down to the nursing staff who oversees and reports back to the doctors during the entire drug detox process.

Depending on the situation, a variety of medications and treatments are given to the client to reduce or eliminate the withdrawal symptoms and ensure patient safety. We want each patient to have the most comfortable and safe drug detoxification program possible. For this reason, we provide a completely personalized approach depending on the situation and the intoxicating substance. Our detox services include:

  • Heroin Detox
  • Alcohol Detox
  • Opiate Detox
  • Prescription Pill Detox
  • Benzo Detox
  • Cocaine Detox
  • Meth Detox

Different substances manifest different withdrawal symptoms during the detoxification. Some substances can take longer and be more dangerous than others during the detox process. Alcohol detox, for example, can produce acute withdrawal symptoms that are highly uncomfortable and even life-threatening. Without the right support and supervision during the detox phase, withdrawals can become deadly. All patients receiving addiction treatment services at Costa Rica Treatment Center are ensured that any dangerous withdrawals will be immediately addressed by the right medical professionals to preserve patient comfort and health.

HOW LONG IS THE DRUG DETOX PROCESS?

The drug and alcohol detox process varies from person to person. There are a variety of factors that can influence the duration of the drug detox and the symptoms experienced. Patient age, health, and number of substances used can influence the severity of drug detox. Additional factors, such as whether or not a patient has been detoxed before, are also influential to the drug detox process. Symptoms may include:

  • Digestive issues
  • Anxiety
  • Rapid heart rate
  • Excessive sweating
  • Depression
  • Tremors
  • Confusion
  • Elevated Blood Pressure

Withdrawals can vary greatly from one person to the next. However, with medically monitored detox, patients can rest assured that they are receiving the necessary support for their safety, health, and sobriety. Typically, withdrawal symptoms start gradually. For some substances, such as heroin, withdrawals can develop within a few hours since the last use. Other substances may take longer in terms of withdrawals. With most substances, withdrawals generally peak a few days after the last use, and then subside. For most patients, the detox process only lasts a few days (7-10 days).

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER DRUG DETOX?

Detox addresses the physical toxicity of drugs and alcohol, but it is not the only step in the recovery process. The behavioral patterns, choices, and situations that fed into addiction must also be addressed. At Costa Rica Treatment Center, we provide a variety of treatment approaches to address the emotional and mental aspects of addiction, alcoholism, and substance abuse.
