Opening Hours :
Costa Rica Treatment Center’s clinical team takes into consideration the importance of developing and experiencing a life worth living; not just talking about it. Our clients are exposed to rich treatment experiences developed by our qualified clinical team that are unlike any other program currently available. As part of our therapeutic treatment program, we give our clients the option of going on a variety of adventure trips unlike anything they’ve experienced before.
Adventure therapy is a form of experiential therapy that involves various types of experiences, often outdoors. Although some adventure therapy activities at Costa Rica Treatment Center are done indoors, most of the activities are conducted in Costa Rica’s natural environment.
Some of the activities that our clients participate in include things like hiking, rock climbing, horseback riding, fishing, and games. Adventure therapy allows participants to take calculated risks and explore personal issues in a safe, supportive environment under the guidance and support of mental health professionals.
One of our regular activities includes going to Finca la Piedra for the weekend. We try to get up there once a month. The idea is to reduce stimulus and engage our clients in a more intimate environment. Once there we employ a variety of experiential therapies intended to heal deep rooted issues resulting in drug addiction and substance abuse disorder.
Finca La Piedra is home to 9 purpose-bred horses. Each of these horses was born and raised on Finca La Piedra with the express intention to be used in a healing capacity. Horses are typically non-judgmental, have no preconceived expectations or motives, and are highly effective at mirroring attitudes and behaviors of the humans with whom they are working. Often times, we only need to be in a horse’s presence to feel a sense of wellness and peace.
Research shows that people experience many physiological benefits while interacting with horses, including lowered blood pressure and heart rate, increased levels of beta-endorphins (neurotransmitters that serve as pain suppressors), decreased stress levels, reduced feelings of anger, hostility, tension and anxiety, improved social functioning; and increased feelings of empowerment, trust, patience and self-efficacy.
Activities like grooming, feeding, haltering, and leading can facilitate this connection and have enormous therapeutic benefit. At FLP, a qualified staff member will guide you in this experience.
In addition to Horse Therapy, Finca La Piedra offers some of the best hiking in the country. Being out in nature, away from the chaos of our daily lives and technology, can allow people to connect with each other, themselves, and nature in a way that brings about peace and a sense of well being. The unique setting and ideal climate allow for a genuine rural Costa Rica hiking experience at all skill levels. A standard hike on FLP is around 5 km round trip and takes about 3 hours. The destination is a point that overlooks the pueblos (small towns) surrounding the farm where the group will stop for a snack and relaxation.
During the hike, the group will pass through 6 separate pastures that house the horses of FLP. There are also a variety of optional trails that wind through the more dense foliage and allow for exploration of the small spring fed streams that flow through the property. Hiking is the perfect prefix to Horse Therapy, as it will allow the group to move into a more calm state thus maximizing the benefits of the activity. Remember, the horses have a tendency to mirror the behavior and attitude of humans who are in close proximity.
Regarded by the National Geographic Society as “one of the most biologically intense environments on Earth”, Corcovado National Park provides our clients with a unique adventure therapy expedition complete with 12 step meetings in a private haven of serenity that will unquestionably leave a mark.
